Independent Legal Opinion on the FLIP Defense Traditional Rifle Grip
In October 2025, FLIP Defense LLC commissioned an independent legal opinion from Michelle & Associates, P.C., a law firm with extensive experience in California firearm law and regulatory matters. The purpose of this review was to evaluate our Traditional Rifle Grip design under current California law and provide a professional, third-party opinion.
Question Presented:
Does the Flip Defense Traditional Rifle Grip constitute a “pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon” as that term and related definition are used when identifying an “assault weapon” under California law?
Short Answer (from Michelle & Associates, P.C.)
Because the Flip Defense Traditional Rifle Grip does not allow for a “pistol style grasp in which the web of the trigger and (between the thumb and index finger) can be placed beneath or below the top of the exposed portion of the trigger while firing,” it is not a “pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon” as used in the identification of an “assault weapon” under California law.
